At Unilabs, we believe that building strong relationships with our suppliers is key to successful procurement. We are committed to ethical business practices and professionalism, and we expect the same from our suppliers.

Transforming Supplier Collaboration: Unilabs' Digitalization Journey

To enhance collaboration with our valued suppliers and drive efficiency in our operations, Unilabs is embarking on a transformative digitalization journey. As part of this initiative, we are introducing a cutting-edge eProcurement tool known as 'Coupa'. This digital solution serves as a cornerstone in our efforts to modernize and streamline our operational processes.

Through Coupa, we provide suppliers with a comprehensive platform that ensures a seamless experience from initial engagement through contract management. This initiative is a pivotal step in our digitalization journey, designed to enhance transparency and efficiency throughout the procurement lifecycle.

The eSourcing tool facilitates electronic bid submissions, bid status tracking, and quick notifications about sourcing event outcomes, significantly reducing response times and expediting decision-making processes.

Moreover, by conducting supplier onboarding through Coupa, we aim to streamline operations and provide enhanced visibility into our processes. Coupa's intuitive interface simplifies the supplier onboarding process, reducing administrative burdens and accelerating the entire process.

Additionally, Coupa's contract management capabilities empower suppliers to efficiently manage their contracts with Unilabs, offering easy access to contract terms, renewal dates, and performance metrics. This not only enhances supplier satisfaction but also fosters stronger, more collaborative partnerships between suppliers and Unilabs.

These digitalization efforts are currently live for suppliers conducting business with our operations in Sweden and our Headquarters in Switzerland. We are excited to announce that we'll soon be rolling out these capabilities to other Unilabs countries, further extending the benefits of our digitalization journey to our global network of suppliers. With Coupa, suppliers gain access to a unified platform for Sourcing, Supplier Onboarding, and Contract Management, enabling streamlined interactions and fostering enhanced partnerships with Unilabs.

The Procurement Process

At Unilabs, we adhere to a well-documented procurement process to guarantee the highest level of service to both our internal stakeholders and the vendors we collaborate with.

The following diagram illustrates a condensed overview of our procurement process.

Unilabs Suppliers Procurement Process

Unsourced Need: When a requirement for goods or services arises within Unilabs not met by existing contracts or vendors, it initiates the procurement process.

Sourcing Event: A sourcing event is initiated at Unilabs as we identify potential suppliers and invite them to submit proposals or bids to fulfill the identified need. This helps in selecting the most suitable supplier(s) through a competitive and transparent process. Potential vendors are asked to agree to our Code of Conduct and might be requested to sign an NDA before submitting any bid. The internal team at Unilabs reviews all proposals and makes a formal decision.

Supplier Onboarding: Once a supplier is selected, they go through the onboarding process, which involves providing necessary documentation, setting up accounts, and establishing communication channels to facilitate future transactions.

Contracting: Contracting involves negotiating and finalizing the terms and conditions of the agreement between Unilabs and the selected supplier(s). This step formalizes the relationship and ensures clarity on responsibilities, pricing, delivery terms, etc.

Purchase Order: After the contract is signed, a purchase order is issued and sent by email to the supplier specifying the details of the goods or services ordered, quantities, prices, delivery dates, and any other relevant terms.

Following this step, further processes such as invoice management and payment are seamlessly integrated and managed by our Finance team to ensure timely and efficient transactions.

Our Commitment to Ethical Business:

Unilabs upholds high ethical standards in all our business relationships. We ask our suppliers to share these values by operating with integrity, transparency, and compliance with our Third Party Code of Conduct and Terms and Conditions. These guidelines cover fair business practices, respect for human rights, environmental responsibility, and more. When suppliers partner with us, they show their commitment to these values, building trust and collaboration in our mutual efforts. Together, we aim for excellence in every aspect of our partnership, creating an ethical business environment.

Antigen Test

What is a COVID-19 Antigen Test?

A COVID-19 antigen test detects coronavirus proteins in the mouth and throat. This test determines whether a patient is currently infected with COVID-19.

Antigen testing is a suitable ‘first line of defense’ test against COVID-19, particularly in individuals who have COVID symptoms, because it is a relatively simple procedure, and is quicker than other approaches – like PCR testing; it typically takes around 15 minutes for a result.

It is less accurate than PCR testing, however, as a high viral load is required for the antigen test to detect SARS-CoV-2 virus (COVID-19). Some people in the early or late stages of infection may therefore return a false result, although this is not common.

How is a COVID19 Antigen Test Taken?

COVID-19 antigen tests typically involve a swab of the patient’s nose and throat (sample can also be saliva or blood). This sample is then analyed using the same underlying processes as a pregnancy test.

Results are typically available within 15 to 30 minutes of the sample being analysed, meaning a patient on site may have their results before they leave.

Antigen Testing at Unilabs

Unilabs and International Guidelines consider PCR to be the “Gold standard” for diagnosing current COVID-19 infections, due to its higher sensitivity and accuracy. PCR testing can also reliably detect COVID-19 in people who have no symptoms or signs, which is true in around 1/3 of infected people.

However we recognise there are specific situations when the speed and simplicity benefits of antigen testing make it an attractive option; for example, the mass-testing of schoolchildren and their families, or last-minute testing of travellers.

Unilabs works with a wide variety of businesses and groups to deliver bespoke antigen testing programmes at scale.

Unilabs Antigen Test

What to expect from a Unilabs COVID-19 Antigen Test:

Here is what you will experience during a Unilabs COVID-19 antigen test:

  • Depending on your chosen location, you are either greeted by receptionists at one of our centres, or we travel direct to your door
  • We carefully swab the inside of your throat (tonsil area) and nose (nasal channel) whilst ensuring you are relaxed, informed and comfortable
  • Your sample is typically then processed on site while you wait. If COVID-19 guidelines prohibit you from waiting at your testing location, we will take your contact information so you can still receive your results swiftly
  • You receive your results within minutes of your test

Understanding Your COVID-19 Antigen Test Results

There are 3 possible outcomes you may receive from a COVID-19 antigen test:

1. Positive COVID-19 antigen test result

2. Negative COVID-19 antigen test result

3. Void antigen test result

Here is what each outcome means:

What a Positive COVID19 Antigen Test Means

A positive COVID-19 Antigen test result means it is extremely likely you are carrying SARS-CoV-2 virus (COVID-19). This means you are at risk from developing COVID-19 yourself, and could also pass the virus on to others.

You should seek medical advice in relation to your infection and follow local government guidelines, which usually involves self-isolating for a recommended time to avoid infecting others.

What a Negative COVID19 Antigen Test Means

A negative result from your COVID-19 Antigen test means it is very likely you did not have Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2 virus) at the time of your test.

Negative Antigen test results are not a guarantee you are free from infection, and of course do nothing to change your risk of future infection. You should continue to practise social distancing and cleanliness protocols with the usual rigour, and follow your local government advice day-to-day

What a Void COVID19 Antigen Test Means

A void antigen test means your test was not viable. Most void results are due to a fault with the testing kit.

Fortunately, with antigen testing being so swift, in many instances a second test can be swiftly taken and evaluated.

Who Should Get a COVID-19 Antigen Test?

Unilabs recommends COVID-19 PCR testing as the most accurate test for diagnosing current coronavirus infections.

We recommend considering antigen testing if any of these circumstances apply:

  • You are exhibiting coronavirus symptoms
  • You think you have been infected for approximately 2-4 days
  • You are in a time-critical circumstance, e.g. required to travel imminently
  • You are responsible for an environment where regular mass-testing is required, for example: a busy workplace or a school

Contact our team today to discuss whether PCR or antigen testing is the best solution for the needs of you, or your organisation.

SEROLOGY TEST

What is a COVID-19 Serology (Antibody) Test?

A COVID-19 serology test detects human SARS-CoV-2 antibodies. This test determines whether a person has ever been infected with COVID-19, and therefore whether they may have a degree of potential immunity.

Serology refers to the study of antibodies in human fluids, most frequently found in the blood. Antibodies are the proteins produced by the body to recognise and fight off infections, including bacteria and viruses.

Serology testing is a great way to determine which members of a population (such as a workforce) have previously had COVID-19 infection, and therefore might have some immunity to reinfection.*

A serology test is different to a PCR test, which tests for current infections; you can read more about PCR testing here.

How is a COVID19
Serology Test Taken?

COVID-19 serology tests involve taking a blood sample to check for coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) antibodies.

Blood is extracted with a venous blood draw, i.e. usually blood taken from one of your veins. This blood sample is then taken for testing and analysis by doctors in a medical lab.

The Unilabs Serology Testing Experience

At Unilabs, our dedicated and attentive staff make sure the whole process of receiving the test revolves around you.

We are experts at dealing with all aspects of serology testing, from managing anxiety around needles to clearly explaining the procedure. We want to give you the most comfortable experience possible.

What happens during a Unilabs COVID-19 Serology test?

  • Depending on your chosen location, you are either greeted by receptionists at one of our centres, or we go directly to your door
  • We carefully collect your blood sample whilst ensuring you are relaxed, informed and comfortable
  • Your sample is swiftly delivered – usually by courier - to the nearest testing laboratory
  • Once at our lab, your blood sample will be processed and analysed by one of our experienced lab technicians
  • After analysis, we relay the test results to you immediately via your preferred means of communication.
serology test

Understanding Your COVID-19 Serology Test Results

There are 3 possible outcomes you may receive from a COVID-19 serology test:

1. Positive SARS-CoV-2 antibody serology test result

2. Negative SARS-CoV-2 antibody serology test result

3. Void serology test result

Here is what each outcome means:

What a Positive COVID19 Serology Test Means

A positive serology test result means that the test has detected some SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19)antibodies in the blood sample. This means it is probable that you have had coronavirus before (even if you were asymptomatic). It is not possible to determine exactly when you might have been infected.

Remember, having previously had COVID-19 is not a guarantee you are immune to future re-infection from coronavirus. You should continue to observe all possible precautions to avoid contracting and spreading the virus in your community and/or workplace.

What a Negative COVID19 Serology Test Means

A negative serology test result means your test has not found any COVID-19 Coronavirus antibodies. This means it is unlikely that you have previously contracted coronavirus.

However, a negative serology test result does not guarantee you have never had coronavirus at some point. It is widely believed that antibodies to COVID-19 diminish over several months, so it’s possible you may have once had antibodies, but had not retained enough of them to be detected at the time of the test.

What a Void COVID19 Serology Test Means

A void serology test means this specific test could not return a usable result, but thankfully, this does not happen very often. Most void results are due to a fault with the testing kit, but they can also happen in instances where ruptured blood cells, during transport, spoil the testing sample. This unfortunate occurrence means you will need to take the serology test again to receive a result.

In such a circumstances, we will do our utmost to rearrange another test for you in the quickest, and most convenient manner.

How Long Do COVID-19 Serology Test Results Take?

The typical time taken to deliver serology test results is 2-3 days, but it can be slightly longer in some cases.

Circumstances which could lead to a longer timeframe include your sample collection location and the workload of your testing laboratory. Unilabs always works hard to provide your serology test results as quickly as possible, provided the integrity of the procedure is not compromised. We will always do our best to inform you of any unexpected delays, so you can plan accordingly.

serology test

Who Should Get a COVID-19 Serology Test?

Serological tests can identify previous infection or vaccination against SARS-CoV-2 (COVID) virus. It is also worth remembering that around 1 in 10 people will not produce antibodies, neither post-infection nor post-vaccine, so serology will not pick up all cases of previous COVID.

Serology testing has been recommended by the IFCC in the following instances:

  • Can support molecular testing (i.e. LAMP and PCR testing) which has been negative in persons who are still experiencing COVID-like symptoms for more than 14 days
  • Can support where molecular testing may be persistently positive well after infection has appeared to have resolved
  • To support any previous diagnosis in children where there is a chronic inflammatory condition
  • For public health information by the authorities

Serology testing is NOT recommended in:

  • Persons with early stage COVID infection (less than 14 days)

Can I Take a Serology Test after COVID-19 Vaccination?

Yes. A serology test can still indicate whether you were infected by COVID-19 in the past. The antibodies developed by your body several weeks after a coronavirus vaccination are different to the ones that the serology test detects. So to test for these, you may be required to take a different serology test than standard.

For more information on serology testing please contact Unilabs today and we will be happy to assist you.

*N.B. data is still emerging about how antibodies contribute to COVID-19 viral re-infection rates.

COVID-19 PCR Testing From Unilabs

What is PCR Testing?

PCR, or Polymerase Chain Reaction, is a cornerstone of modern biological medicine. The PCR process creates millions of replicas of a particular piece of DNA in a sample, amplifying its ‘visibility’ and making it easier to analyse in greater detail. PCR has enabled huge advances in diagnostic medicine including our response to the coronavirus.

How Does PCR Testing Detect COVID-19?

PCR testing is very effective for early diagnosis of COVID-19 in currently-infected people.

PCR tests determine whether an individual is currently infected with SARS-CoV-2 virus (COVID-19), and therefore contagious to others. This is extremely important towards preventing further transmission of the virus. PCR detects the RNA (ribonucleic acid) of the coronavirus. This is different to a serology (antibody) test for COVID-19, which detects human antibodies. Find out more about serology testing here.

PCR can only detect COVID-19 RNA if the individual is actively infected. Detection of viral RNA with PCR testing allows COVID-19 diagnosis early on – before the body has produced an antibody response or even before the individual shows symptoms.

pcr covid-19 test

How is a Unilabs PCR COVID-19 Test Taken?

A Unilabs PCR test for coronavirus requires a nasal and/or oral swab and even a saliva sample. Depending on your location, Unilabs offers home PCR testing kits or testing at your closest Unilabs clinic.

In addition to our established clinics, we also offer sample collection through our mobile labs, mobile collection teams, as well as our professional flying nurses that go to on-site locations.

Your test sample is taken to one of our medical laboratories for clinical testing by our skilled lab technicians. Your swab sample will be examined and analysed to determine whether or not the virus is present.

What Does a Positive PCR Test Result Mean?

A positive COVID-19 PCR test result means it is extremely likely you are carrying SARS-CoV-2 virus (COVID-19). This means you are at risk from developing COVID-19 yourself, and could also pass the virus on to others.

You should seek medical advice in relation to your infection and follow local government guidelines, which usually involves self-isolating for a recommended time to avoid infecting others.

What Does a Negative PCR Test Result Mean?

A negative result from your COVID-19 PCR test means it is very likely you did not have Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2 virus) at the time of your test.

Negative PCR test results are not a guarantee you are free from infection, and of course do nothing to change your risk of future infection. You should continue to practise social distancing and cleanliness protocols with the usual rigour, and follow your local government advice day-to-day.

How Long Does It Take to Receive PCR Test Results?

Once your PCR test sample analysis has yielded a result, Unilabs recognises the importance of getting that information to you swiftly. Unilabs PCR test results usually take around 12-48 hours from us collecting your sample.

The speed of your results can increase or decrease depend on factors such as your physical distance from the lab, or the workload of the lab at that time. If there are any anticipated delays, we always do our best to contact you regarding this.

When Should I Get a COVID-19 PCR Test?

If you have shown any of the common COVID-19 symptoms then you should self-isolate and book a PCR test for yourself as soon as possible, according to guidelines in your country.

If you have been recently exposed to others who are displaying symptoms or who have tested positive for the virus, then you should consult your local guidelines to know if it is necessary to book a PCR test.

For more information about PCR testing please get in touch with our experts today.

COVID-19 Sports Testing

Unilabs COVID-19 Sports Testing: Keep Your Eye On The Ball

As COVID-19 spread in 2020, sports fixtures soon became one of the most missed aspects of “life as usual.” However, steps are now in place to reintroduce professional sports back into our lives. Elite sport is now taking place in most countries, although usually in empty stadiums, with the help of testing and ‘bubbles.’

Even with no crowds, however, the businesses and teams involved in sporting events require constant COVID-19 testing vigilance. A single positive coronavirus diagnosis can lock down an entire sports team and its supporting staff.

In an industry as diverse and mobile as professional sport, a robust testing solution is fundamental. Unilabs has worked with a variety of sporting organisations to provide testing regimens that have kept them running smoothly through the pandemic.

COVID-19 and Sport – Which Test Is Best?

Unilabs COVID-19 PCR tests are ideal for sporting teams, as they diagnoses current infections (even in individuals who are not displaying any symptoms); with our on-site or remote PCR testing support, results can be swiftly reported in as little as 70 minutes, keeping COVID-19 out of the workplace and allowing the game to continue. Read more about PCR testing here.

New sampling techniques like Saliva PCR testing allow teams to enjoy a more comfortable solution than the traditional nose swab.

It is essential for sporting teams to conduct a regular testing regimen and have contingencies for additional testing in the event that a staff member or athlete tests positive.

COVID-19 Sports Testing – How To Win

The many sporting institutions Unilabs has supported with thorough COVID-19 testing include Portugal’s football Liga, the Slovak Volleyball and Beach Volleyball teams, and some of the most important cycling events in France.

To keep these events running, mass COVID-19 sports testing has been required.

In order for Portugal’s Liga football league to reopen in June, Unilabs rolled out a vast-scale testing programme in two waves. It was crucial to have comprehensive and confidential coronavirus testing of all parties involved, meaning 13,000 tests were processed pre-training; then 72 hours and 24 hours before every game played. All results were anonymized, with reports sent to each of the following: Football club Medical Department, League Association & Healthcare State Agency.

For more information on effective COVID-19 sports testing, or to discuss how we can help your sporting team or organisation stay competitive through the Coronavirus pandemic, contact us.
